Area/Region

Based in the western mountains of Honduras, Cooperativa de Servicios Agropedcuarios Gaulcinse Limitada (COSAGUAL) was established in 1994 in order to produce high-quality coffee and to elevate the living standards of its 125 members.

Use of the Fairtrade Premium

Fair Trade premiums have helped enable the cooperative to invest in various initiatives:

Education

Increased revenue from Fair Trade has enabled COSAGUAL members to send their children to college. Two members obtained degrees in marketing and agronomy and later returned to work for the cooperative's administration

Environment

The cooperative is committed to organic farming methods; its members control plant pests and diseases using natural remedies. They also use compost to fertilize their farms

Credit Program

COSAGUAL has established an internally managed credit program for farm management projects

Health

The cooperative’s members participate in the Good Samaritan Foundation, a program administered by the Hospital el Sur de Lempira
